06/08/06 Day 3 Heading for Home

Once the banging of doors stopped things quieted down for a time in the valley of the dinosaurs. Until the generators lit off so's the kids (and adults, sigh) could watch tv in airconditioned comfort. It's a different sort of 'camping' from mine - not really camping at all, rather a temporary move for the summer. My bad, I was in the wrong place for my style of overnighting, and shouldn't complain. The walk in tent sites were described at the park office as being from 40 to 200 YARDS off the road. 40 to 200 FEET would be a closer approximation. They were a bit further from the pay showers, though.
My riding efforts after the Elbert debacle were not in vain - I was faced with a leasurely hour from Mueller to Colorado Springs, and was listed on the 5:30pm flight. So I took my time cleaning up, smelling the roses and admiring the view.
Back northward on 67, then east on 24 I came into Woodland Park, with a sharp eye for a breakfast spot. First on the radar was a Starbuck's (bless 'em) with a view like none I have seen before. I still don't speak 'Buckeze very good, despite the fact that my son has worked there. 'You want room?' always draws a blank stare until the barista holds up a pitcher of creame. No thanks, just a regular small black cup of coffee please. Sitting outside, sipping my cafine and gazing at the mountains I was treated to the 'who's who!' of W.P., I'm sure. But since no one was making introductions it's still 'who's who?' to me.
A short while later I was zipping along 34 into the Springs, where it merges with I-25 for a short stretch. What a commute! If you had to spend time in the car on the way to work, this is the way to do it! Cave of the Winds, Garden of the Gods, Seven Falls! I followed the signs back past the airport and up to the storage unit, where I signed papers, swiped cards, and then tucked my 'baby' away in it's new home. The only minor snag was directing the cab to a storage unit after I'd changed clothes. They cannot seem to grasp what I'm doing over the phone, but once they see me, and the storage area, and I put my helmet in the trunk, the drivers usually break a grin and commend me on my idea.

So, there's trip #1 for the summer, and I'm off to a good start. We'll see how plans hold up for the remaining months.

Safe rides.
